Guest Speaker: Stafford Kelly - Apiary Action Plan Stafford Kelly’s passion for bees began early when he received his first hive for his fifth birthday. Growing up on the family farm in Inglewood, where beekeeping, eucalyptus distillation and cropping were part of everyday life, Stafford developed a deep respect for the rhythms of nature and the practical skills required to care for hives. Beekeeping runs in his family. His father, Frank Kelly, was a respected commercial apiarist, while on his mother’s side, uncle Mal McClean was a well-known beekeeper in the Inglewood region. Their commitment and expertise shaped Stafford’s lifelong dedication to bees and the land. Stafford served 38 years in the Australian Defence Force, gaining skills that now underpin his success in beekeeping, community service and industry engagement. Today, he supports Jeff and Gareth Maunder in their commercial operation, managing over 2,000 hives while also tending his own apiary of 25 hives. Now actively managing Varroa, Stafford brings valuable personal and professional insights into how this pest impacts both commercial and recreational beekeepers. He currently serves as Deputy Chair of the Bendigo Branch of the Victorian Apiarists Association (BBVAA), working alongside partner Peta Dawe, Secretary of the BBVAA. Together they are known for their ongoing commitment to supporting Victoria’s beekeeping community. Stafford will soon undertake the VAA -VDO Varroa Specialist Training as a BBVAA delegate. |
