VAA Melbourne Section – May 2025 Meeting & Apiculture Competition

Parking: Available at the rear of the church Celebrate the incredible world of bees, honey, wax and craftsmanship at the VAA Melbourne Section Apiculture Competition.

Whether you're a seasoned apiarist or a budding beekeeper, this is your chance to showcase the best of your hive. Entries from all experience levels are strongly encouraged. Meeting Schedule

7:00 PM: Registration Opens Competition Steward, Isles Arthur will be at the door, welcoming all exhibitors and managing competition entry registrations.

7:15 PM: Beginners’ Corner Presented by Melbourne Section Committee Member, David Baskett

Topics include:

  • Storing & Maintaining Equipment over the winter
  • Building New Equipment

7:30PM Apiculture Competition Join us for the Melbourne Section Apiculture Competition, where competition judges Peter Adams and Mike Love, both multi award-winning experts, will assess entries, share insider tips for competition success, and provide expert feedback on this year’s results. Don’t miss this special opportunity to learn from two of the most respected names in Australian apiculture.

Competition Classes

1. Liquid Honey - Light: Delicate sweetness

2. Liquid Honey - Medium: Golden and that perfect in-between balance.

3. Liquid Honey - Dark: Bold, rich, full of character

4. Creamed Honey: Smooth, honey heaven

5. Natural Granulation Honey: Naturally crystallised with even texture

6. Young Beekeeper Honey: Primary and Secondary school students or under 18.

7. Infused Honey: Natural honey blended with herbs, spices, fruits, or botanicals to create unique flavours.

8. Comb Honey Cut Section: Nature’s raw beauty

9. Beeswax - Min. 1kg Block: Clean, high-quality 100% Australian beeswax.

10. Decorative Beeswax: (Natural Colour): Creative, artistic presentations made from 100% Australian beeswax.

11. Honey Beverage: Mead or non-alcoholic honey-based drinks.

12. Australian Beeswax Speciality Product: Innovative or traditional, value-added or commercially viable uses of Australian beeswax. Some examples include balms and pigmented candles.

Competition Presentation Requirements

  • Extracted Honey (excluding comb): Clear, 500g round glass jars with plain white or gold lids
  • Comb Honey Section: Weight: 400g–550g, presented in a clear, food-safe plastic container
  • Beeswax Block (min. 1kg – Natural Colour): Solid, clean block in round, square, or rectangular form
  • Australian Honey & Beeswax: Must be 100% Pure Australian and sourced from the exhibitor’s own apiary
  • Exceptions: Infused Honey, Honey Beverages, and Australian Beeswax Specialty Product entries may include other ingredients; however, they must still feature honey or beeswax sourced from the exhibitor’s own apiary.
  • Ingredient list: An ingredient list must be submitted with the entry for Infused Honey, Honey Beverages, and Australian Beeswax Specialty Product.
  • No names or identifying features may appear on entries.

Chair’s Wrap-Up

Enjoy a raffle, door prize, and stay up-to-date on the latest beekeeping news and events.

9:00 PM Finish the evening with a supper celebrating honey and the hive.

This is more than a competition; it’s a community celebration of the skill, care, and creativity behind every hive. We can’t wait to see what you’ll bring to this year’s competition.
